No voice and data at the same time?

I just read that you cant surf the web on the phone or tether and use the phone at the same time with Verizon or Sprint, is this true? I am not talking about wifi, I am talking about cell service.

On my iPhone I am constantly using both at the same time to get info for clients while on the phone with them when away from the office. Especially with I am surfing the web at the airport and get calls. Miss a call, miss a sell.

Is this true?

i use to tether to my laptop and still use the phone as long as i was tethered first.
