Photo attachments appearing as video clips

New to Android here (from iPhone) and getting started has been interesting.
Using AT&T + Samsung Galaxy S2

I've received a few photos from friends today (all from iPhones, if that helps)... and they open as 10-20 second video clips... rather, they're not moving, but 10-20 seconds of the same image.

Any ideas as to why this is happening?
Does this mean these files are taking up the same amount of space as a video clip?
I find this very strange and confusing

That happens sometimes to me too when sent from a bb. Most of the time they are fine, but sometimes they appear as clips. I've never looked into it though, just annoying
