3-button inline remote headphones on Android

So, apparently there are 2 general types of inline remotes on headphones-- 1 button and 3 button. I have a pair of the 1-button type-- the Klipsch Image s2m IEMs. They seem to do just fine. Now, on the 3-button sort, I seem to regularly see very clear iDevice labeling and packaging-- "Made for..." and "Works on...", with nary a mention of Android or other mobile systems. How do these 3-button remotes work? For that matter, do they work at all on Android? More specifically, I found myself tempted by a pair of Etymotic hf3 IEMs, and I'd like to know what behavior to expect with my Evo 3D. Many thanks.
