Can I root without flashing ROM?

I hope I used the right terms in the title...

I don't want to use a custom rom or lose the data I have, I just want root so I can delete AT&T bloatware.

Possible?

It all depends on the phone you have and what method is use to root.
You certainly can run a "stock" rooted ROM in most cases
As for retaining data it depends on the rooting method.

I think you can use Unrevoked to root without loosing data. I don't have the Aria but my buddy does and he rooted using Unrevoked and didn't loose anything. Of course always be safe and do a back up
