Email app keeping all deleted e-mails - not keeping sync'd

My dad's phone is running Android 2.3.5.

He uses a Hotmail address.

If he:
  1. Downloads the e-mails on his phone, then
  2. Deletes an e-mail via. the website (mail.live.co.uk)
... the deleted e-mails doesn't disappear from his phone in the Email app.

This means he now has 500+ e-mails in the app when there are only around 50 in his inbox.

Any idea how this can be solved?

Most mail apps have a limit for how much email they will hold/sync. Try lowering how much email he downloads to a few days and see if that works. The setting should be in your mail app under menu -> Settings

Are you sure the app being used syncs and not simply downloads (or is configured that way)? If it downloads you will have the choice to remove from the server or not.
