Are 3g speeds generally lousy and erratic or is it just my speed with Virgin Mobile?

I generally get speeds from the double digits to about 200-400 kbps with only occasional and passing spikes to near 1mb. Hardly enough speed to be useful for anything like videos or surfing the internet.

I have gone round and round with Virgin Mobile tech support and had them change settings but it never changes. Is this generally how 3g speeds are for everyone?

Thanks, Joe

I get good 3g coverage here on Verizon (Same network as Virgin) and I'm getting 328kbs - 837kbs. I know that signal strength and tower load play a big part in 3G speeds.

What are your signal strength readings like?

That seems low to me. My wife's iPhone 3gs consistently gets 1-2 mbps on AT&T. (yes she still has a 3gs) Is it that AT&T's 3g network is that much better?

Surprisingly or not yes, AT&T does have beefier 3G network in alot of places. Being on Sprint 3g I'm getting 100 to 600 kbps speeds and if I got 1-2 mbps speeds I would feel like I was on 4G by comparison.

vm began throttling data speeds after you hit the 2.5gb switch on 03-25-2012 i do believe... they also released a zv9 radio and security update recently... have you recieved/accepted an ota update?... does the former apply to you?... hope this helps... :)

Interesting - but one would hope that the Virgin Mobile rep would have seen that he had hit the cap when looking at his account. Or maybe it's too new and they don't have that in their Support script yet.

Actually VirginMobile uses Sprint's towers. I think you're thinking of StraightTalk which runs off some of Verizons towers.
