Default Google account without setting up a new gmail?

You guys are going to hate me for this, but is there any way to use a non-google e-mail address to setup a google account? I could've sworn this was possible before. I'm basically getting my kids Nexus 7's but rather than sign them all up for gmail when they already have e-mail accounts, I was hoping I could just use their existing e-mails for simplicity.

First of all, why would anyone hate you for asking a very legit question? Second I don't think that is possible although I could be wrong. I'm pretty sure you need a Google email. You don't have to use it, don't even set it up in the email app, just set up the one you want them to use.

Yes and no. You can use you own domain (like ) rather than a Gmail address, but you can't set up a Google account under a Hotmail or Yahoo (etc..) email address.

It doesn't cost anything, but it's still a Google account. You can find some more info at Google Apps:

Hope that helps. I've had my email address (which is my own domain) set up like that for years now. No problem setting up my phone with it, and it functions exactly like a Gmail address does.

That sounds like what I'm looking for, I just want them to stick to one e-mail address but still have all the usual Google integration. It has to be a custom domain though, not hotmail, live, etc?

Nevermind I'm dumb and just re-read what you typed. :P

I've heard of it but its gotta be rooted and you gotta go through some major hoops to get it this type of question is more of an question but as it stands with stock you must have a gmail account to acess anything in the play store you can use it but unless your willing to side load every app from potentially shady sources then no you can set up diff emails in the email manager but no I'm sorry google dosent aloow it unless you hack the crap out of it
