Phoned dropped in beer!
A fried dropped his HTC Desire into a glass of beer. We got it out instantly and removed the sim, battery and sd card, then dried it. I think he put it in rice to dry it out. Now. It turns on and seems to work but won't read the SIM card. It can see it, but won't connect to the network. I cleaned the sim connector with isoprop alcohol.
Any help gratefully received - 11-20-2012, 10:37 AM #2
Re: Phoned dropped in beer!
Is it possible to put another SIM card in there to test to see if it works? Then you can determine if it's the SIM card or not.
Also, I did the same thing when I was in college, lol.

Re: Phoned dropped in beer!
how long in the rice?
In my experience, done this twice (not beer), I had to put it in a tupperware container closed with slightly warmed rice (microwave) for 2 days.Thanked by: - 11-20-2012, 10:09 PM #4
Re: Phoned dropped in beer!
How was the beer? j/k.
I'm with Devinator. Stick another SIM card in that bad boy and see if it works...if not, then its probably something with the hardware and I'd give it a few days before making a final determination...Thanked by: - 11-20-2012, 10:15 PM #5
Re: Phoned dropped in beer!
Thankfully I've yet to try the rice trick, but every time I've read up on it, it seems 48hrs is the bare minimum to have it sealed up in lots of uncooked rice. Gut feeling though is that beer is a very dirty/sticky substance (unlike dropping it in water) and frankly I think the device is done. You might get 6 months out of it before it starts acting up and/or dies completely. Hope there is a more positive outcome, although I wouldn't hold my breath.
Hope this turns out better for your buddy though...Thanked by: - 11-20-2012, 10:34 PM #6
Re: Phoned dropped in beer!
Great advice given. I would use desiccant from a shipping store. It is like rice on roids. They use it to keep freight dry in ocean going containers.

Re: Phoned dropped in beer!
The odd thing is, it could find a different sim, but wouldn't register on the network.

Re: Phoned dropped in beer!
Phone is probably a lost cause at this point. Did it trigger the water sensors? If not, you can exchange it, just be sure to leave the beer part out. If so, you are probably SOL and I hope you have insurance.
