My phone worries me, I have an LG Vortex and it's about two years old and it's starting to malfunction, so I figure its time for a new phone. The only thing preventing me from purchasing a new phone is that I need to keep my messages and switch it to a new phone. Can I just take it to Verizon, or maybe RadioShack, and ask them to do this, I know they can move contacts over, don't know about messages... Or is there an app that I can do this with, or something online, or anything. I'll pay for it if necessary, it's just very important I keep my current messages. Any suggestions are appreciated!

The Google Play store has apps to backup your SMS messages.

Free: SMS Backup +
Paid: My Backup Pro

SMS Back up & Restore has been around forever and does an excellent job. No rooting required either.

I agree with Paul627g, use SMS Backup & Restore: https://forums.androidcentral.com/e...eshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&hl=en&token=__AqpJGz

I use it all the time when upgrading ROMs or to backup sms. There's also a call log backup just in case you need it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.CallLogBackupRestore&feature=more_from_developer#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEwMiwiY29tLnJpdGVzaHNhaHUuQ2FsbExvZ0JhY2t1cFJlc3RvcmUiXQ..

Now, these two apps are good to backup and restore on the same device. I have never taken the saved data from one device and saved to another -- Paul, if you have done this please chime in. It should work, but just in case it doesn't, backup the data elsewhere just in case: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=sms+gmail+backup&c=apps

Will this work with a lot of messages (around 5,000)? And also, it won't go crazy and delete or do anything to my messages, will it?

Having 5000 messages on your phone is not worth it. It actually hurts your phone performance. If you need them then backup then up and move them to your pc

I've used SMS Back up & Restore between multiple phones. It worked for me.

Also the app features a nice selective restore so you don't have to restore everything.
