I have contact groups that I use in the desktop gmail client to send messages to distribution lists without any issues. Those groups get synced to my android contacts and I can see them in the groups tab. However, neither gmail nor any sms app that I have tried actually use these contact groups for anything.

Am I missing some setting for this to work or is this not implemented in android?

This is one of the unfortunate limitations of the Gmail app on Android--there's no native function to email a group. There's an app called Gmail Group Share that works pretty well, so give that a try.

Thank you for suggesting Gmail Group Share! Still only part of the solution, but good to have something.

By the way, I did find a way to send texts to a predefined group of contacts in Go SMS Pro: when composing a new blank message click on a little '+' in the recipient field to bring up the address book with all of your groups (in the 'Groups' tab).
