Weird things happen when my wifi/3G icon turns gray. suggestions for fixes/workaround?

I have a Asus TF700(tegra3) and an HTC OneXL (qualcomm chipset). both are running cm10.1.

I noticed on both devices is that once the wifi/3G icon turns gray, weird happens to my devices:

1. stuff like playstore (when I'm downloading stuff) or chrome would suddenly FC
2. the screen would start flickering.
3. music would just stop playing using poweramp

And this happens on both devices! so it's not device dependent. I've searched the net and according to forum thread here in android central, gray icons means my phone is not connected to Google's servers.

I'm really stumped on how to fix it. on the HTC, this doesn't happen when I'm running a custom Sense-based ROM.

I would really appreciate if you could help me out. I've searched the net but came back empty-handed. I really really wanna stick with cm10.1 if I can.

It can be the internet speed, low server connection or bad connection phone to router

but even so, I somehow doubt that should cause the symptoms I mentioned like poweramp just stopping playing or flickering screen?
