I have recently just switched from a iPhone to HTC One, I came across some really cool home screens (such as on minimal android), I didn't know you could customize these, so now i am very eager to try them out myself. However clicking through some of the home screen instructions, there is a section called "ROM", does this mean the device has to rooted first? Is there a general guide somewhere on the interweb on how to create these? Sorry I am very VERY new to android. Thanks!

Well first of all welcome to Android. Second of all you should be able to find a guide if you search carefully enough.

Most screens are just nice wallpaper and well chosen widgets, none of which requires rooting.

You can make your life easier with a new launcher, which allows you to customizethe layout and orientation of the home screen/screens.

Now go forth and research!

Thanks!! But what are the ROMs posted for then?

ROM's are the software that runs the actual phone. Different ROMS let you control things like how the battery works, tweaking the screen, adjusting all sorts of things at the system level.

Try Apex Launcher. If you buy the pro version you can use themes made for other launchers (not all, so just try free ones). The theme can change your wallpaper and your icons. Or you can just change your icons and set your wallpaper manually. Way too much fun and time - consumed playing with the phone once I learned you didn't have to be rooted to use a launcher.
