I obtained an Android from a friend and created a second account for the Play Store. Now I want to remove the initial account (first on the list). It has as its ID a non Gmail account and I do not know the password associated with it.

I went into App settings and for Google Play Store clicked on Clear data. That did not remove either account.

What are the step to take to remove the initial account?

On my galaxy S4:

Settings > Accounts > Google > "Account Name" > "Remove Account" on bottom right corner of the screen.

Thank you for that solution. It worked for me. :) I mistakenly thought I'd be able to remove an account from the Google Play app - which is where I created an account. I would never have thought that to remove an account that an app is using, that you would go and remove the account for all apps on the device. I'll have to study the scope and handling of accounts for Androids, which appears to do things 'globally' - unlike the website-style of each-place-manages-its-own-account.
