Changing Text message and Email icons

I apologize if this is in the wrong section.

I understand how to change icons, but for those icons that change due to a notification. Where and how do i provide a 2nd icons or a number status next to it similar to the originals?

Currently my icons are changed for text and email, however they do not change with the incoming.
