Sim Unlock Question

Hi guys,

I paid ?2.99 for a SIM unlock code off Ebay for my HTC One X (the seller had 99.6% positive reviews so seemed okay) but it didn't work after trying twice.

When I contacted the seller he told me I needed to unroot, go back to stock ROM and lock the Bootloader. I used the rooting method below and since I didn't flash a ROM I thought this meant I'm still 'stock'.

My questions are:

(1) Since I never flashed a ROM I am still stock, right?
(2) Why would I need to unroot and relock the Bootloader?
(3) How many more unlock attempts do I have?

My rooting method was (i) unlock bootloader (ii) flashed CWM with fastboot command and then installed SU from Zip using CWM.
Phone: HTC One X on T-Mobile (EE) in the UK
Android version 4.1.1

You're stock, but you're rooted. The two aren't (directly) connected.
