There seem to be number of these

Does anyone know anything about them?

How are they financed? Bandwidth costs money!

Default Re: Cost Free VPN Services

I run my own vpn server on a flashed router. It uses the PPTP protocol - that is sufficiently secure for my purposes. The only computer I cannot connect to my own VPN is my Chromebook. Google refuse to support PPTP on Chromebook, saying it is insecure - well, as I said it is secure enough for me, but I am denied the choice by the big boys. I was looking for an occasional alternative and saw there was a free L2TP service, which is supported on Chromebook. From UK to UK I get a very fast connection. Let's see what happens when I take the Chromebook outside UK and need a UK IP address. I only once managed to connect from the UK to the US server - and it was unusably slow.

My question was about finance. Why are these free services made available? How does the provider benefit? Is there an expectation that users will upgrade to a paid for service?
