Does adding phone number to National 'Do Not Call' registry help or hurt me?

Since Monday came around, I've been getting calls from unknown people. I want to add my phone number to the national Do Not Call registry, but I'm wondering, does this work? I'm afraid of it actually exposing my number to telemarketers even further, making things worse?

Good luck. Keep in mind if it works it usually takes a few weeks to kick in (at least as far as I remember). But it does seem to help.

Where I live, we also have a national list like this, but it's being circumvented by companies setting up shop across the national border, and they are using that very list to glean cell phone numbers. They can call us and go unpunished. I'm not on the list, but a few friends made that choice, and some seem to regret it. My tactic was to create a contact called "Ztelemarketing" which is set to "auto ignore". Every time I get a junk call from some new outfit, I add it to that contact. The name starts with a Z ,so it lives at the bottom of the contact list, and that sort "kills them on first call". This contact has about a dozen numbers. This tactic works fairly well for me.

Good luck.

I've gotten zero junk calls since I registered. That's on both my phone numbers. Before I registered I was getting quite a few junk calls.

Where do you live? I'm referring to the United States' National Do Not Call Registry found here: https://www.donotcall.gov/

Mrsmumbles, either you're unique or I am. I've been registered for years, and I still get 5 or 5 junk calla a day. I report each and every one of them, and I still keep getting calls. It's gotten to the point that I screen all my calls, and cut off any solicitation as soon as I recognize what it is when it's going to voicemail.

Haven't gotten anything much on my cellphones, but I have an awful lot blocked on them.

I don't have a landline phone anymore, just 2 cells. On my main line I got quite a bit of telemarketing a couple of years ago. Registered that number on Do Not Call and after a while it totally stopped. I think I registered my second line but I don't remember, anyway, no junk calls on it yet. All I can go by is my experience.

I live in Canada, and we have the same system here. The problem resides in living in a major urban center near the border. On the east coast, large centers like Boston, Chicago, Detroit, Montreal, Toronto and to a certain extent, New York are so close to each other, and the long distance calling rates are so low, that when these "Do not call" registries came into effect, the larger telemarketing outfits resorted to setting up operations across the US/Canada Border. If a telemarketer is based in Canada, the FCC can't do anything, and the opposite holds true, if an American Outfit calls people in Canada the CRTC can't do squat.

The local talk radio morning man has run 2 hour segment about this tactic when it became a prevalent practice, because it is his pet peeve. According to the specialists he had on the show, it's pretty much the same gimmick in all big urban centers along both the Canadian and Mexican borders, from the Atlantic to the Pacific. The morning team have even has a running joke about winning a cruise when the weather's bad...

Since mid 2012, myself, I've "won a cruise" every two~three months, according a to robot-calling machine.... What can you do....

Try reregistering, Sauce. I used to get those calls constantly but nothing for over a year now here since I put my main number on the site.

Edit: And I live in the NE, so I'm not very far from the border.
