I open my notification panel a LOT during the day and am looking for a better way to toggle it other than swiping down from the top (Galaxy S4). My friend has a LG G2 and it has a button right on the bottom home panel to do this - is there a way to get this on an S4?

That may be because he has a different launcher. I know Nova has an action for that.

Yeah I checked out the Nova launcher and you can configure a downward swipe anywhere on the screen to toggle the notification panel. It's nice but I would still prefer a simple tap of an icon. It's nova for now I guess. Thanks for the reply.
