    Default Android encryption question(s)

When you encrypt an Android device (at least Samsung), it requires that you put in a 6 character password with at least one number. After encryption is done, you can change your lock screen back to a 4 digit passcode. How does this affect the encryption? When you reboot a device in this state, you enter the 4 digit passcode at the encryption screen. Is it still encrypted with the 4 digit passcode or using the 6 character password somewhere in the shadows? If it's using the 4 digit passcode, why does it require a 6 character password to begin with?
