Default Are unlocked phones worth it?

I'm on my first smart phone, a Motorola Citrus with a very modest service ( pagepluscellular.com ).

One of the things that has kept me from getting a better phone is that I don't want another monthly recurring expense. I don't have that much opporutnity to use a smart phone. I am on my computer all day and often in the evening.

I've thought that the answer might be to buy my own unlocked phone and take it to a cheapo pay as you go service.

I'm gravitating toward the larger phones, which can be quite expensive, $600.

Is it worth taking this approach versus just getting a regular plan where the cost of your phone is subsidized?

Is it easy to work with a variety of services with your own unlocked phone?

If so, which ones and ballpark how little can you get away with paying monthly?
