Does removing SIM card prevent OTA updates?

If you want to prevent an OTA update without rooting the phone, will removing the SIM prevent the OTA update?

If so, what are the negative consequences of removing the SIM card? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Removing the Sim would prevent OTA updates from your carrier. It would also prevent you from receiving service from your carrier, such as phone, text, mobile data.

And since you didn't mention your device, if you have a non-carrier branded phone or tablet, it will still receive updates over WiFi.

Airplane mode will do about the same thing, without touching any hardware. (BTW, in most cases a rooted phone won't update, even if you haven't done anything but root it.)
