Share a SIM card between two phones?

Is it possible to remove the SIM card from one smartphone and put it in another to use for a while, then revert back to the original?

For example, if I wanted a smaller, more compact phone (or maybe a more rugged one) to take with me when I travel, would it be possible to put the SIM card from my primary phone into a secondary phone and use it for a while? Would I continue to have service through my carrier, without added cost of a second phone?

Yes, as long as the two phones are compatible with the carrier. There would be no extra fee.

Cool! I read some other posts that seemed to indicate you could do that, but I had never heard that before. Oh what wonderful things I'm learning here!
