Why won't my nexus media importer see files on flash drive??

Sure this is a topic covered before but I'm having an issue with this trying to watch movies. I have a new 32 GB sandisk flashdrive...I downloaded nexus media importer and of course have the otg cable ( 2 actually ) I got from Fry's. When I plug in the flash drive nexus media importer picks it up but won't show a single file off flash drive. Now otg lite version off play store does but won't play do to size constraint. So what am I missing what am I doing wrong??? Thanks for any tips and help

Is the flash drive formatted as FAT32? (If it's formatted as NTFS, the phone probably can't read it.)

Use a file manager (ES File Explorer, My Files or Total Commander) to copy the files to the phone.

If you want to just play the media files, without copying them to the phone, use My Files, find the file you want to play and press it.
