Unread Email Count Wrong

My unread email count has gone wrong in the last couple of days. It's saying I have an unread item, but there are no items to read. The counter on my home screen shortcut is similarly wrong as well. I've tried clearing data and the cache from the app in the all app tab on my settings, but the problem comes back again when I reinstate the account. All help gratefully received... Stock app on Xperia M2 running Android 4.4.4.

Welcome to Android Central! Is it only the unread count badge on the icon that is wrong, or is it also wrong from within the email app itself?
