Can't unlock bootloader

I have the SDK tools installed on my linux box, my paths exported. Reboot bootloader works. But when I go to fastboot to unlock my bootloader to install the factory image it just stalls and says waiting for device.

Anyone having this new problem? It's certainly new to me.. Or am I doing something wrong? I am on LMY47D and I'm trying to get the latest factory image LMY47I installed because of a suspected memory leak, apps crashing after phone is on for a few days. Problem goes away with a phone restart. So I heard the new factory image addresses these issues.

I'm on a Nexus 5 I bought from Google.

If you haven't already, try running the fastboot-commands as root. At least that worked for me..
