Why is my mic cutting out during calls?

Mic cutting out during calls

Both in standard and speaker. Plugging in headphones is the only way to get a stable connection. I found a couple old threads about this on google but with no real resolution and just in hopes that it was a bug that would be fixed through Lollipop. Is there something more definitive these days to try? I haven't received the update yet.
