Why aren't my messages deleting?

why aren't my messages deleting?

Yes, I'm hitting the right thing but it takes forever to delete a conversation that consists of about 100 or so texts and I'm trying to delete a conversation of 5,000 but my phone is not having it. It's been 10 minutes already and still nothing. I've tried turning my phone off and turning it back on, then to repeat the process but I'm not having any luck. Please help. I have a droid max by the way.

Welcome to Android Central! If you don't mind losing all conversations, go to Settings>Apps>All, select Messaging, and Clear Cache/Clear Data. If there is an app for Messaging Storage, do the same for that.
