Gmail app burning through data, how can I stop it?

Gmail app burning through data

Ever since 22nd or 23rd September my gmail app has gone bonkers in burning through data. My email traffic is incredibly light, up to 10 emails a day tops, yet the app is now getting through gb of data a month! Looking at my data use for the Gmail app:

11-22 sept: wifi 30mb, mobile 11mb
23sep-8 oct: wifi 3Gb, mobile 950mb

Clearly nuts. I'll have to disable the app until it's fixed or I can solve locally. Any suggestions?

What are your settings? My stock Email app was slurping data as well until I switched the entire app and both accounts on it to manual. I choose when my mailbox refreshes. If it's auto refreshing in the background it could sap your data like crazy.
