My phone screen went dark, and then my whole phone got really hot. What could the problem be?

My phone screen went dark, and then my whole phone got really hot.

I was on my phone scrolling through apps like I always do, and all of a sudden my phone screen turned black and my phone started getting really hot. I'm not sure what's going on.

Either your battery is experiencing thermal runaway (put it in the freezer - in a zipped plastic bag - for about 15 minutes - if that doesn't stop it the battery is bad) or there's a short in the phone and something (probably the motherboard) has to be replaced. (If the phone is still under warranty, it's all covered - except your data - you'll probably lose it.).
