Will deleting files in /storage/emulated/legacy, delete the files permanently?

I have deleted folders in the photos gallery which stood as twins and left some twins too. After investigating I came to know that there is a path like /storage/emulated/legacy. Then I copied a photo in /storage/emulated/0/'folder name' ad checked in the gallery. It showed up on one folder only. Then I deleted the folder containing files from legacy in gallery and then checked the original folder and it had only the thumbnail of the images. If I click on the image it says "image doesn't exist or image deleted". Can I recover the deleted files? It is around 500 photos full of memories. Anyone who has a solution to this problem please reply to me.
