There is sim in the mobile but it says emergency only. What could it be?

Basically, the reason for that because your phone is not connected to the network. It will also be saying no service in some cases.. Try to go to the Settings and select Mobile Networks. Once you are there, please go to Mobile data or Data Enable and look for the Network Mode option and change it to GSM only or WCDMA.
