How can I look at the code that is running an app?

I have built a few web sites but now I'm learning how to build apps. Is there a way to look at the code that is running a particular app on my phone so I can get an idea of how it is put together?

Android apps are written in Java. I also learned web development from looking at other websites. However trying to reverse engineer an Android app from the APK file seems like torture to me, vs downloading Android Studio and learning from example code. But your mileage may vary. Thank God you are getting into Android programming after Eclipse was replaced by Android Studio. Eclipse was like jumping into a hot tub filled with double-edged razor blades.
