Screen blank while receiving a call so I can't answer quickly, how can I set this up to answer calls faster?

screen blank while receiving a call so i can't answer quickly

work was ringing me and when i picked up my phone i had to find the power button, wait for the power button to activate, do my unlock pattern then swipe to answer the call, this take roughly 3-5 seconds, of which my work could very likely hang up, luckily i got it this time but it has happened many times where i haven't made it in time, is there something in settings i can do so that when receiving a call either everything is unlocked or i can just put in my unlock code?

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Has it always been like this? Even when locked, the screen should still light up when the phone is ringing, and you should be able to simply swipe to answer the phone (and not have to unlock the screen first).
