Welcome to Android Central! Which phone?

The microSD card is primarily useful for storing media files (like photos, music, videos) or documents, so you could move those kinds of files. If your phone supports it, try moving apps to SD by going to Settings>Apps, selecting an app, and tapping Move to SD. If you don't see that button for any app, then the phone doesn't support that option. Be aware that moving an app to SD only moves a portion of it, so it might not save that much space.

Actually, moving an app to the card can cost space. Moving a piece of an app leaves a link to the piece in internal storage (since that's where Android looks for the piece). If the piece is smaller than the link (and it easily can be), the link takes more space than the piece it replaced. That's why some people complain of losing space when moving apps to the card.
