Why won't my Samsung Stratosphere 2 turn on?

Samsung stratosphere 2 won't turn on.

My phone is being weird it goes threw moments where when I hit the power button it won't turn on unless I slide out the keyboard, then if I hit the power button it won't turn the screen off. When it does this and I take the battery out, as soon as I put the battery back in, it turn itself back on instead of me having to hold down the power button. My phone is about 2 1/2 years old. I prefer to not have to get a new phone, and if I did I would just get this same phone. Best ive ever had.

I've looked it up and I can see why you would like it.

Is the battery still good? Also, perhaps a switch is activated when sliding the keyboard in or out, which may need attention?
