I'm looking for a good off contract Android phone for under $500 Canadian. Here are the options my carrier has available. What does everyone think is the best of the bunch? Feel free to post something not on my list. I would ideally like a notification light and an SD card slot.

LG G3 - $450
Moto X Play - $420
Moto G (3rd Gen) - $230
Alcatel Idol 3 - $360
Nexus 5x (Google Store direct) - $499 (32GB version)

I have a really good M2M plan that is not eligible for a phone subsidy hence the off contract requirement.

Also, does anyone think I should just bite the bullet and get something better and go over $500?

Thanks!

Welcome to Android Central! From that list, I'd suggest the Nexus 5X, but that's because I much prefer Nexus devices for the prompt system updates and the lack of bloat.

If you want an SD card, consider the ASUS ZenFone 2. The top-of-the-line ZE551ML (with the faster Atom processor, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB internal storage, and an SD slot) goes for $299 and is an excellent value.
