Forced Limiter / Compressor on phone speaker?

There seems to be a limiter / compressor type effect being applied to the audio coming out of my phone speaker. In other words, if i'm trying to play music/etc and the volume is anything under 100%, instead of turning down the gain on the audio output, some algorithm makes it so any audio below a certain decibel is turned down or off, and leaves the louder audio almost intact. If i need to be somewhat quiet and turn my volume down, it makes all music sound choppy as I'm losing a lot of the sound. I can see how this could be useful for making calls on speakerphone, but it's not needed for me and i cannot seem to find any setting to turn it off. (ZTE N817, btw)
