using US-purchased Samsung Galaxy Tab in Germany

We live in the USA and have just bought a Galaxy Tab from T-Mobile. Have been led to believe that it is, as is, WiFi compatible for European use, but that we need to unlock it and install a prepaid, short-term, German sim card (upon arriving in Germany) to be able to download data via the Net in Germany. Has anyone done this with this specific device? Is it really that simple. One tech-savvy person wonders if a prepaid data plan (sim card?) is available in Germany?

The sim is if you want to use the mobile network, although you may connect to a wireless router without first getting a international sim card.
