Random ads?

Hey all, unlocked G5 on Verizon. I am having random ads pop up and start playing, typically when I unlock the phone or start an app (Doesn't seem to be app specific). I was wondering about the source. My phone is unlocked and on Verizon. I am using the Google Now launcher. Would the ads be from Verizon because its an unlocked phone? Or are they from the launcher or another app? If its an app, is there a way to find out? Like I said, they aren't a huge problem, but if they are related to an app I do not use a lot, I'll get rid of the app. Thanks for any help!

This kind of thing can be tough to narrow down, since it could be due to adware installed alongside any app (or it could be an inherent "feature" of an app). If pkcable's suggestion of News Republic doesn't pan out, then you may just have to uninstall apps one by one until the behavior goes away.
