One of my brother's closest friends in college was a senior software developer at Google for a couple years. I don't know offhand what he actually worked on, but I did visit my brother and his friend at the Google campus while my brother was living in SF. He (the friend) said that the benefits and work environment are unbeatable.. but that they were nearly running him into the ground with work, deadlines, and overtime that aren't as publicly-advertised as the five-star cafeterias, animal rules, haircuts, and "creativity breaks" are.

That may have been a result of his specific position there, but I don't know.
