Re: newbie question: Any benefits to 4G phone in 3G area?
Not that I know of. If you keep it in 3g mode over 4g the battery life will be good since the 4g takes more power and the batteries in the 4g phones are usually bigger but not always.

Re: newbie question: Any benefits to 4G phone in 3G area?
Most carrier locked devices don't have a 3G/4G toggle. And with those devices the benefit of an LTE device over CDMA/HSPA+ is nil. You may get a little better battery life but it won't be that noticeable, since LTE battery drain happens mostly when it's connected to the LTE network and data is traveling via LTE. A borderline dormant LTE radio in a phone won't change much as far as battery is concerned.
