When will software super seat the hardware for you?

We have now seen octa-core phones, jam packed with 2 gigabytes of ram... for god sake thats almost as powerfull as my Toshiba Satellite (less the laptop it is glued together and still working with cosmetic damage all over), we have seen laptops slow down with specs - yes there are those few exceptions with 16gb of ram but when will we seen the users shift from choosing phones based on their power to their software, when will the ram and processor's become so large you simply don't care about? (e.g as in when the market reaches a standard bench point you don't care about it)

Ram - 1gb? 2gb? 3gb, 4gb... 16gb?
Processor - Dual, Quad, Hecta, Octa?

I can understand software gets more intense and requires a bit more power, but when is it too far? when will we need to scale apps back or the processing power becomes irrelevant when all the phones have it across the board?
