After updating Chrome Beta to version 28 on my Nexus 4, I noticed that Adaway was no longer blocking ads while browsing sites that weren't in my whitelist. After beating my head against the wall for a while, I thought to try disabling the bandwidth management setting I opted into during the initial install. Voila, ads are now gone. Apparently, whatever technology Google is using to compress pages pretty much ignores the 'hosts' file. After purging all adblockers from the play store, this move by Google does not surprise me one bit. Hopefully this "feature" remains optional in future versions of Chrome.
