Nice concept and seems like a good idea somewhat. Simple, easy changeable upgrades, less waste, no sending a phone in to get repaired. Brings my back to the days of building Lego sorta. :D

IMO, this type of thing will be the future.

The problem is that any phone that's custom made (like all phones are now) will stomp the crap out of a modular design like that. So much time, energy and money would have to go into getting each piece to fit into that standard that the back-plane would cost more than a phone does now. It's an interesting idea, but the way mobile devices are designed is partially out of necessity. High speed signals require specific routing and engineering around that would be very expensive and would likely have a large negative impact on the phone's performance.

I predict that some other technology will come along to revolutionize smartphones way before that idea comes about. In other words, in the time it would take to get that to work smartphones won't look or act like that anymore.
