On my one X just to the left of where it says 4g/lte there is a symbol that showed up on my phone. It is a white box with what looks to be a capital "N". Can anyone tell me what this is/for?

It sounds like NFC has been turned on. You should be able to go into settings and turn it off.

Just because NFC is running, isn't the reason why it's there. It is related to NFC though. I have NFC running all the time and I never get anything like that.

What device do you have? It might be different for each device. If I enable NFC on my Droid DNA, the icon shows... It's kinda fugly.
