Default Why do people think tablets are just large smartphones?

I don't know why people think tablets are "large" smartphones.

in general i think tablets are like mini portable laptops regardless whether it is is a Android/IPad or Windows 8 tablet because they have the functional of a laptop and the potablity of a smartphone so they are in between the 2.

And tablets are a "Laptop replacement" for lots of people and tablets can do way more than just " media consumption" they can use them to do lots of content creation/productivity stuff as well.

Tablets are nothing like a "large" smartphone for me because tablets(Android/Ipad) are getting new and more "exclusive" features and more powerfull apps that smartphones won't be getting in the future imo.

So the line between tablets and smartphones are getting bigger and bigger apart.

I was wondering what does everyone think? Do you think tablets are large smartphones or not? and what do you think about tablets in general?

I don't know why you think they do.
Is there any research you can link to that supports your assumption?

Tablets don't "have the functional of a laptop". Not by a long shot. If you think they do then I submit you don't know what a laptop is capable of.

And tablets are a "Laptop replacement" for lots of people
Indeed: for people who didn't use laptops to their full potential either.

and tablets can do way more than just " media consumption" they can use them to do lots of content creation/productivity stuff as well.
You can also create a Bollywood musical production in your bedroom, but it's not very convenient, and odds are it will never be going anywhere.

Tablets are nothing like a "large" smartphone for me because tablets(Android/Ipad) are getting new and more "exclusive" features and more powerfull apps that smartphones won't be getting in the future imo.
That's a totally unfounded assumption on your part. A.k.a. wishful thinking.

So the line between tablets and smartphones are getting bigger and bigger apart.
To the contrary: phones are getting bigger, whence the horrible moniker 'phablets', and some 10,1" tablets are perfectly capable of making/sending and receiving phone calls and SMS/MMS messages. So everything is merging/converging, instead of drifting apart.

I was wondering what does everyone think? Do you think tablets are large smartphones or not?
Tablets are tablets, afaic. And some can make phone calls too.

and what do you think about tablets in general?
Nice if you haven't got a good laptop and/or don't know how to use it's potential.

Unless you buy a Windows 8 tablet, that is all you get, an oversized smartphone. I have a Lumia 1520, for my tablet, I want something with real power.

My S4 has just as many features as my Nexus 7, if not more. Tablets don't assumably come with proprietary features phones don't. If you need a powerful machine, by a laptop with an i5 or higher processor.

That's because they are,, as simple as that a laptop is a real computer,, a tablet can't do many things a laptop can... A tablet is a tablet not a pc. A tablet has several restrictions a laptop doesn't

I think Android tablets are certainly useful for some forms of productivity. Google Drive (Docs & Sheets) is steadily becoming a solid office suite, and there are so many other good 3rd party office suites out there, all of which allow you to perform a number of business activities on a tablet that you might otherwise require a laptop for. You won't have all the bells and whistles that Microsoft Office or even the free PC office suites like Libre Office have, but many if not most people who use these suites will hardly use said bells and whistles.

These apps are also available for smartphones, with the same functions, but the crucial difference between the phone and the tablet is screen real estate. It is much easier to work on a document or spreadsheet on a 7" or 10" screen than it is on a 4 or 5" screen.

Windows 8.1 tablets certainly have their advantages, but there are still some drawbacks of 8.1 in general that I'm not crazy about. On my Win 8.1 desktop (which has a pretty speedy CPU), apps can be fairly slow to open--is this the case on Win 8.1 tablets? It may seem to be a minor issue the first time, but if it happens every time, I imagine it could get pretty irritating--just like how people complain about lag in some Android devices.

Something I've noticed, Windows Tablets when they are shipped with Windows run smoother. I don't know if it's due to hardware optimization or not but my gaming PC with 16 gigs of ram starts slower and loads app slower than my Lenovo Miix 2 8.

That's interesting. Maybe I'll test it out on other Win 8.1 tablets next time I'm at Best Buy or Fry's.

My tablet replaced my laptop for the vast majority of my home use. I rarely use my laptop for anything but my music editing software and the occasional game. For work, I can do more & more tasks on my tablet too. Long battery life, great screen, always on, fast boot up, video calling, & super portable.

If I want Windows, I want a laptop or a desktop. I've always found tablets to be a novelty item: I don't normally leave the house with a bag, so carrying anything larger than a phone is automatically an inconvenience. If I'm going to be inconvenienced anyway, I want a big screen, a keyboard, and a mouse, or at least a trackpad. Now I could get a big tablet and a bunch of peripherals for it, or I could just bring a laptop. So far, I've seen no good reason to do the former.

no way a tablet would replace a laptop for me lol

i'm a developer (still in the studying) and i just CAN'T see myself using code blocks, netbeans, eclipse, etc...on a tablet ._. and even tho you can do some coding thru Android it is just NOT the same as sitting in front of your laptop, with a big screen and a keyboard and mouse and coding for hours!

it is already tiring doing it on a 15.6" screen...can u imagine on a smaller one?

assuming tablets can replace laptops in a general way is totally wrong!

for those who mostly use web browser, e-mail, office...that might be possible but some stuff are just NOT replaceable and you'll still need a laptop!

I recently purchased Dell Venue 7 and still not sure how to think of it. No, the device itself is just marvelous, however, NO, tablets don't replace laptops. Even though you can do all the simple stuff (like Internet and games), I don't think that tablets are suitable for real work, like text editing or heavy internet research.
As for smartphones... Well, tablets are just in the middle between smartphones and laptops. If you have a kind of Phonepad and can make calls from you tablet, then it's really looks like an enlarged smartphone.
But frankly, it all doesn't matter. No matter what you think of such devices, if it's in term of "What to buy?" it's all case sensitive and should be regarded in light of what purposes the user want to use his device for.

Tablets are just big phones. I had a Nexus 7 and every time I was using it after about 20 minutes I was longing for my laptop. It also couldn't do anything I can't already do on my iPhone or Moto X. So I didn't enjoy my tablet experience. For me really it's too much money for something that is just a big phone.

IMO in some cases they are over sized phones! And in some cases they are under sized tablets! Over sized phone = 10 inches or bigger. Under sized tablets = Sammy N3 or bigger!

They are really either large screen phones without the radios (iOS and Android) or small screen laptops that aren't attached permanently to a keyboard (Windows 8).

Personally, tablets are going to start to shift (well, they've already started) towards how Microsoft sees tablets and the larger form factors will merge with laptops (which will soon all be removable touch UI screens with a dockable keyboards).... but the small form, like the Nexus 7... will always be kind of stuck in limbo.

I have a Nexus 7... great device. My wife loves the thing. It's her 'sit on the coach and chill' device and gets heavy rotation around the house. So while it lacks the utility and portability of my Nexus 5, and the sheer functional usefulness of my 15' laptop, it'll always have a use. But at that size, it kind of is just a phone-less large screen smartphone.

A fair amount of tablets do actually have a phone app integrated into the OS. That is probably the compelling argument that it is an oversized phone.

You know.... I was 100% in that camp before I ended up picking up a Nexus 7. I had been thinking about getting a tablet for the Fam.... something my kids could use to pass the time away on a long trip when one didn't want to watch what was on the DVD.... plane rides... crap like that. My wife started using it and became quite attached to it. The form factor makes it equally capable and portable.... phone/tablet/laptop... all three fill three very different roles.

because they feel as if they dont need a tablet since they have a phone and/or a PC/laptop. If i had a laptop id probably pitch the tablet. way to much device duplication.. you know?
