Hangouts notifications

I'm sorry if this has been asked but I can't find the answer anywhere else.

I love the google hangouts app, however it's insanely annoying to get a notification every. single. message. I understand this behavior when the phone screen is off or if I'm in another app, but this happens while I'm in the app. I don't recall this happening on the IOS version of the app, but for some reason, I can't seem to fix it. The only settings I can change are to disable notifications all together, mute notifications all together, or snooze notifications. Neither of these are what I'm looking for.

I just want notifications to stop while I'm in the hangout chatting. Is there a way I can do this? Is there another recommended app for Google Hangouts? Thoughts?

I don't get notifications for the hangout I currently have open. But, if I'm reading in one and a message is posted in another, then I get that notification.

That made perfect sense, and that's what I'm trying to get. However, when I'm in a hangout and that hangout gets a new message, I get a notification.
