Hangouts photo quality

When transferring photos via the Hangouts app, is anyone else experiencing the quality being unbelievably bad since the latest updates?

I don't mean worse than the original, I expect some compression, I'm talking absolutely atrocious to the point where text isn't even legible, people's faces are just blocks etc. Even when saving locally, it remains the same. My wife and I are both seeing this on an S6 and a G4 yet I can see little mention of it elsewhere on the web. Am I going nuts? This is data only, not MMS.

Having the same issue also. No idea what's up but the quality is terrible and most people on the receiving end keep telling me all my photos are blurry or very very small. I've tried sending via the local phone gallery and through choosing in hangouts also... And the Google photos app.. All the same result.

Same issue on S6. Does anyone have any insights here? A Google search shows this issue has existed in Hangouts for a while, but there is no clear cause or resolution. I experience this issue when sending Hangouts messages to Hangouts users on iPhones, all on AT&T. So, the theories about inter-carrier compression differences would not apply.

Is no one else experiencing this?

I have this same issue on my S4 when my friend sends me pictures (he is on an S6) the resolution is too low to make out text or anything, and he usually sends pictures of book passages, so I have to get him to type it out...

Had this issue a while ago with my wife and just chalked it up to an update then today I noticed that she send me a picture at work and it was really clear I got in my car just sent me another one and it was blurry then I thought it must be something with the cellular network not Wi-Fi I proceeded to check settings and there is nothing about image quality on mobile networks I did however save an image that was blurry and unreadable once I saved it locally the picture was fine it appears that Google Hangouts will reduce image quality that is shown to users on a cellular network and only download the full quality of the picture to the remote device when you choose to save it or if you are on Wi-Fi sorry about no punctuation but I'm dictating this as I Drive

Once I get home I'm going to have her send me another picture once I'm on my Wi-Fi see if its clear disconnect from my Wi-Fi and have her try it again to confirm final findings

Try it with an optimized photo (One that you have made smaller with software). I suspect those having problems are trying to send photos that are too large and the hangouts software is trying to make them smaller and screwing up the resolution.

I've also been experiencing this, and just updated to 6.0 (which came out this week), and it's still the same thing. And because I'm on Republic Wireless, 3rd party MMS doesn't work, so I currently have no way to send non-terrible photos to people :( This is an inexplicable bummer. It would still be stupid even if it was only doing this over cellular, but the fact that it's doing it even over Wi-Fi just makes zero sense. I feel like Google has recently gone off that Microsoft cliff where their products are getting worse instead of better (see also: Maps). I'm gonna try and see if I can use an APK to roll back to the August update and see if that will fix it...

I have had this same problem on my S6 ever since I got it. Very annoying. Didn't have that problem on my iPhone 4s.
The mighty iPhone, always problem free and the solution for all other premium phones that can do much more.

Just tried sending a photo using Hangouts and the image quality sucked. Had to use Gmail to send an uncompressed version. WTF Google. Guess it's time to lambast then in a Google forum.

I just started experiencing this issue about 3 days ago, never had an issue prior.

LG G4... Same issue. Even worse when sending MMS through hangouts. Anybody hear or know about a solution in the works?
