Must have DATA?

I was planning to keep the cellphone for voice and texting only since I have a desktop with high speed Internet but seems I have to have a certain amount of DATA in the phone in order to keep the phone itself up to date. Software and firmware updates.
Am I correct?

What carrier do you have? Most US carriers do not allow one to use a smartphone without a data plan of some type.

Hi Laura, I have Virgin mobile.

You can get t-mobile prepaid or at&t gophone and choose a plan with the one where you pay if you use data only.

But you need to have unlocked phones I believe.

I was a little confused (three days into cellphones) about having DATA enabled, I had planned to just use voice and text (I have a hi-speed Internet desktop for surfing) but found a certain amount of DATA is necessary on the phone to update software and install apps etc.
