Stopping a cast from any device

I have two chromecasts in my house and both work great. since we have multiple people in the house, I keep running into a problem of stopping a current cast. For example:

Say my wife starts pandora from her phone and casts it to a chromecast for the kids in the morning as they are getting ready for school. They get all ready and then head out, but she does not stop the cast from her phone. I walk upstairs and the music is playing and I just want to quickly shut it off. Everyone is gone and she has taken her phone with her. How do I just hit stop?

The only real way to do this seems to be to get my tablet or phone and reboot chromecast....The button on the chromecast does a factory reset, so that is not an option.

Ideas? Am I missing something? I wish they just had a hardware button on the dongle that when you hit it, chromecast just stops what is it doing. Or in teh chromecast app, when I go to the chromecast device, have a stop button for me to hit... my only option there seems to be reboot.

You can just connect to the chromecast with your phone or computer to stop it. Just hit any cast button and it will connect - the most recent cast overrides the previous. You don't even have to cast anything - just open up google play movies or netflix or another app and hit the cast button up top - as long as you make the connection the previous cast will stop.

Not a bad work-around... I'll give that a try. Still means that the chromecast goes to the apps screen and not its default screen, but might just have to live with that. I wish the chromecast app just had a dang stop button in it.

You can disconnect right after connecting and it will go back to the homescreen. Or if you don't disconnect, as long as you are not actually casting something, it will time out after a little and go back to the homescreen.

Well if your chromecast is powered by or connected to the USB port of the TV, turning it off will also turn off Chromecast, no more streaming. But I can see how this is can be useful if you're watching porn and someone walks in on you.

True, but it is kind of like advising someone to unplug their desktop from the wall just to get their browser to close.

Get remotecast app

Sent from my HTCONE using Tapatalk

I looked at that real quick, but tons of complaints and doesn't actually work on every app..ie, somehow it is app specific. It just amazes me a bit that the chromecast device itself doesn't just have a 'stop what I am doing' function that can be called from the core chromecast app on any of my devices.

If you think of the Cast icon in any Chromecast capable app as a “take control” button, any Chromecast capable app will do what you want in the minimum number of steps.

When powered, the Chromecast is normally in one of three states:
  1. Standby – Chromecast is not under any other device control and is displaying image slide show.
  2. Ready – control of the Chromecast has been initiated by a device, but no streaming has started. This state will time out to Standby in five minutes if streaming is not started or no other commands are received.
  3. Streaming – content being played, if source is on the internet initiating device may be disconnected from the network. Chromecast will play stream until it ends or is interrupted by another device taking control.
Because multiple Chromecasts may be on a network, even if there was an app designed to only end casting, it would require that you choose which Chromecast to interrupt. As it is, Chromecast capable apps like YouTube do the same thing in the minimum number of steps:
  1. Open YouTube app, don’t start any video.
  2. Select Cast icon, dropdown list of Chromecasts (and Roku 3’s) on network is displayed.
  3. Choose the Chromecast you wish to interrupt, Chromecast will stop any ongoing streaming and enter Ready mode.
  4. Close YouTube. After five minutes Chromecast will time out to Standby mode. If you want to start standby mode immediately, repeat steps 2 & 3 to select “disconnect”.

Thanks for the reply, you are right it is the same number of steps and essentially does the same thing. So I guess my request to Google would be to put a 'Go into Standby' button right next to the 'Reboot Chromecast' button in the core app (In addition and even better, a hardware button on the dongle itself, so I don't even need to find one of my devices). ... just seems weird that I need a 3rd party app to do something that should be a core function. Easy to live with though.
